The connection between Yarm and the Railways
goes back to 1820 when a meeting was held in the George and
Dragon Hotel on the High Street that made the decision to go
ahead with the construction of the Stockton and Darlington Railway
- the first public railway in the world.
These days the most obvious sign of the railway is the viaduct
- containing over 7 million bricks and dating back to 1852
it dominates the town. The picture above shows it cutting
its way through Bridge Street.
