Yarm stands on the banks of the River Tees,
and was from the 12th to 18th century the most important port
on the Tees.
The river loops round Yarm almost completely encompassing
it, for this reason Yarm is notorious for some quite spectacular
floods in years gone by.
The bridge that spans the River to the North of the town
dates from 1400, it originally included a drawbridge that
was eventually replaced in 1785 by the curved arch at one
end of the bridge.
